Vice President Emeritus Recognized by NAACP

For more than four decades, Al Renville dedicated his life to serving students at Butte College, leaving an indelible mark on the institution when he retired in December 2020. In recognition of his unwavering commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive educational environment for Butte College students, the NAACP Butte County Branch presented him with the Excellence in Education Award at this year's Black and White Gala and Awards Ceremony on October 14.
 
Renville's journey at Butte College began in 1976 when he was hired as a career development and placement specialist. Despite his initial interview being at another college, Renville chose Butte College as his home.
 
Throughout his 44-year tenure at Butte College, he served in various capacities, showcasing his dedication and commitment to student success. His roles ranged from career development and placement specialist to dean of matriculation services and vice president for student services.
 
In his capacity as vice president for student services, Renville oversaw numerous departments, programs and services aimed at enhancing the student experience. Those programs ensured that students had access to essential resources, a safe learning experience and educational resources to guarantee their academic success. He was instrumental in fostering an environment where students could enjoy equal rights and thrive without fear of discrimination. Renville's commitment to due process for students in matters of conduct issues and grievances reflected his passion for justice within the educational realm. He worked tirelessly to ensure that every student had the opportunity to voice their concerns and receive fair treatment.
 
Upon receiving news of the award, Renville expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am honored to receive the Excellence in Education Award from the NAACP Butte County."
 
"I was blessed to have served thousands of students throughout my career," he continued. "Working with the staff and students at Butte College, Chico State University, Chico State Unified School District, and the communities of Butte and Glenn Counties for 44 years was a privilege."
